Black Business Month Spotlight: Mary’s Cleaning Service

When COVID-19 hit, like many other Lexington-area businesses, Mary’s Cleaning Service suffered. During the pandemic, calls for Anthony’s services came to a halt.  “At the time, the pandemic slowed my business even further,” Anthony said. That’s when she heard about Kinetic’s Black Business Support Fund (BBSF). Anthony, one of many businesses that received the grant, said the funds helped her tremendously at a time of uncertainty. “The grant money helped me pay my employees, if I didn’t have that grant money, I wouldn’t have been able to pay them.”

Though the pandemic has been tough, Anthony has been forced to pivot frequently over her 23 years in business. She notes that her biggest change has been her reliance on technology to help her business stay connected. When Anthony started her cleaning business in the late 90’s, she reached people by word-of-mouth and by placing an ad in the Yellow Pages. Today, she stays connected with her clients and potential new clients thanks to Kinetic Internet. “Without Kinetic Internet, I wouldn’t have a connection to the outside world,” she added.
Overall, Anthony said she’s “blessed” more than anything. “I’ve seen a lot of businesses fold since I started mine in 1998.” Anthony has had three consistent clients over the past decade that have really helped her continue going, even when the pandemic hit. “I’m a hard worker. I’m honest and I’m dependable. I’m also reasonable and I think that’s what’s kept me in business.”

The Challenge
ARH has always been first to respond to the changing demands of rural healthcare. As the largest provider of care and single largest employer in southeastern Kentucky, as well as the third largest private employer in southern West Virginia, ARH has continuously invested in new technology and medical capabilities to carry out its mission of improving the health and well-being of all people within their surrounding community.
The rural nature of ARH’s hospitals and clinics had contributed to a discernible challenge of acquiring consistent connectivity and network redundancy to support their employees and patients. So, when ARH began implementing an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application into their network, the organization knew network connections at many locations would not support new high-bandwidth demands. Because locations were single-threaded and lacked the redundancy of having a second connection, outages were not uncommon.
On top of that, ARH was lacking the visibility necessary to monitor networks proactively, resulting in reactive responses to outages and network issues. They needed a solution stat—one that encompassed monitoring and maintenance from a Network Operating Center (NOC) to ensure all locations were always up and running. ARH knew they wanted a solution that would integrate all of their facilities into a single network to streamline infrastructure management moving forward.
