Kinetic Managers Offer Thoughts on the Importance of Black History Month

We extend the reach of information and communications systems, and we celebrate the wisdom it brings.
This is the first of four reflections on Black History Month, technology and heritage. We begin with Lorenzo Clark, vice president of inside sales for the company:

My parents worked for Texas Instruments when I was in elementary school. I was able to beta test the educational learning toys being invented there, like the Speak & Spell and Speak & Math learning systems. So I was introduced to tech at a very early age. Today, I consider myself a structured thinker, so my business approach merges easily with technology.
Technology not only keeps you efficient but at the forefront of change. If you want to be an industry leader you must be at the forefront of change. And technology makes everyone’s job easier, keeps teams engaged and encourages collaboration. 
My mother used to say, ‘There’s no such thing as linear growth. You have to be able to change your parameters to improve or increase or enhance.’ I’ve always taken that and tried to pass that along to anyone involved with me. Challenge the status quo. Attack it. Evaluate your parameters. Because, at worst ... you can always go back to doing what you were doing before.  
Knowing that black history is part of my lineage is so important to me. The leaders who shaped the Civil Rights Movement also shaped me, leaders like Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and of course, the leader of all leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. His “I Have A Dream” speech is probably the most iconic, most powerful address in all American history, not just African American history.”

The Challenge
ARH has always been first to respond to the changing demands of rural healthcare. As the largest provider of care and single largest employer in southeastern Kentucky, as well as the third largest private employer in southern West Virginia, ARH has continuously invested in new technology and medical capabilities to carry out its mission of improving the health and well-being of all people within their surrounding community.
The rural nature of ARH’s hospitals and clinics had contributed to a discernible challenge of acquiring consistent connectivity and network redundancy to support their employees and patients. So, when ARH began implementing an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) application into their network, the organization knew network connections at many locations would not support new high-bandwidth demands. Because locations were single-threaded and lacked the redundancy of having a second connection, outages were not uncommon.
On top of that, ARH was lacking the visibility necessary to monitor networks proactively, resulting in reactive responses to outages and network issues. They needed a solution stat—one that encompassed monitoring and maintenance from a Network Operating Center (NOC) to ensure all locations were always up and running. ARH knew they wanted a solution that would integrate all of their facilities into a single network to streamline infrastructure management moving forward.
