Setting Up My Wireless Connection

Please select your application from the list below for a detailed set of instructions on setting up your wireless connection.

Operating System

Windows 10

Follow the steps below to set up your wireless connection on your Windows 10 device:

  1. Click or tap the network icon in the system tray.
  2. A list of available wireless networks will appear. Locate the network you want to connect to and click or tap on its name.
  3. To save this network information check the box next to “Connect automatically.” Your device will automatically connect to the selected network whenever it is in range.
  4. Click “Connect.”
  5. You will be asked to enter a password or network security key. Your password can be found on the back of your modem next to "Network/Security Key." The password is case sensitive so make sure you enter it exactly as shown. If you would like to see the password that you have entered, tap or click the icon on the right of the password field.
  6. Click or tap “Next.”

You are now connected to your wireless network.

Windows 8

Follow the steps below to set up your wireless connection in Windows 8:

  1. Press the Windows Key + the C buttons on your keyboard or move the mouse cursor to the right hand of the screen until the charms bar appears.
  2. Click on Settings and in the lower right hand corner of the screen look for Network and click on it.
  3. Look for the wireless network that matches the label on your modem. Note: The name of your network can be found on the back of your modem and typically begins with the letters W-I-N.
  4. Select your wireless network. Make sure the "Connect automatically" box is checked and click "Connect."
  5. Type in the password that is displayed on the modem label then click "Next." Note: Your password can be found on the back of your modem next to "Network/Security Key." The password is case sensitive so make sure you enter the letters exactly as they are shown.
  6. You will be asked if you want to share files across your network when you connect. If you are in your home and you want to turn on sharing select "Yes." If you do not want to share or are in public select "No."
  7. You will then see you are connected to your wireless network.

Windows 8 tablet

Follow the instructions below to set up the wireless connection on your Windows 8 tablet:

  1. Initiate the Charms bar by sliding your finger in from your tablet's right edge; then tap the Settings icon
  2. Tap your wireless network icon that should be showing Available.
  3. When the Network pane appears look for the wireless network that matches the label on your modem hold your finger on the network's name until a square appears; then lift your finger.
  4. Ensure the "Connect automatically" box is checked and click "Connect."
  5. Type in the password that is displayed on the modem label then click "Next."
  6. You will be asked if you want to share files across your network when you connect. If you are in your home and you want to turn on sharing select Yes If you do not want to share or are in public select "No."
  7. You will then see you are connected to your wireless network.

Windows 7

Follow the instructions below to set up the wireless connection in Windows 7.

  1. From your desktop screen you should see a wireless adapter status icon in your System Tray next to your clock.
  2. After you click on that icon, a list of Wi-Fi networks should appear. Click on the "Refresh" icon to ensure you have a recent snapshot of Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Locate your wireless network name (SSID). If your wireless router has its wireless radio broadcasting its Wi-Fi network (most have this by default) you should see your router's SSID listed on the list of networks. Note: On Windstream equipment the wireless network name is located on the back bottom of the router next to SSID.
  4. Click on your SSID. Place a checkmark in "Connect automatically" and click on the "Connect" button.
  5. If your wireless router requires a key or password, this prompt should appear. Type in the key/password and then click "OK." On Windstream equipment this password is located on the back bottom of the router next to "Network/Security Key." Note: Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  6. If you are successful, your wireless status icon should show the signal strength bars without the yellow asterisk.

Windows Vista

Follow the instructions below to set up the wireless connection in Windows Vista.

  1. Click on the Start button and select "Connect To" from the menu on the right to display the "Connect to a network" dialog box.
  2. The list of available networks will depend on the types of wireless networks detected. Look for the name of your network and double click it to proceed to the next screen. Note: On Windstream modems the wireless network name is located on the back of the modem next to SSID.
  3. Enter Security Key. Click "Connect." On Windstream modems this password is also located on the back of the router next to "Wireless Network Key." Note: Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  4. At the next screen, Vista will attempt to connect to your wireless router or access point. Once the connection is established you will be prompted to save your connection by checking the "Save this network" and "Start this connection automatically" boxes.

Mac OS X

To set up your wireless connection on your Mac OS X follow the steps below:

These instructions should work for these versions of OS X

  1. Leopard 10.5
  2. Snow Leopard 10.6
  3. Lion 10.7
  4. Mountain Lion 10.8
  5. Mavericks 10.9
  6. Yosemite 10.10
  7. El Capitan 10.11

Here are step by step instructions for setting up your wireless connection on your Mac:

  1. From your desktop screen you should see a wireless adapter status icon next to your clock. Click on this icon.
  2. After you click on that icon, a list of Wi-Fi networks should appear. Locate your wireless network name (SSID). If your wireless modem has its wireless radio broadcasting its Wi-Fi network (most have this by default including Windstream's modem) you should see your modem's SSID listed on the list of networks. Note: On Windstream equipment the wireless network name is located on the back of the router next to SSID. Click on your SSID.
  3. If your wireless router requires a key or password, this prompt should appear. Type in the key/password and then click "Join." On Windstream equipment, this password is also located on the back of the router next to Network/Security Key. Note: Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  4. If you are successful, your wireless status icon should show the signal strength bars with a darker color than before.

Mobile Device

Android

Follow the instructions below to set up the wireless connection on your Android device.

  1. From your home screen tap on the "Apps" icon.
  2. Tap "Settings."
  3. In the Wireless Networks section, swipe the "Wi-Fi" indicator to "on."
  4. Now tap "Wi-Fi." You will see a list of available wireless networks. The name of your network can be found on the back of your modem and typically begins with the letters W-I-N.
  5. Tap on your network name.
  6. You will then be asked to enter your network password. This can be found on the back of your modem next to Network/Security Key. The password is case sensitive so make sure you enter the letters exactly as they are shown
  7. After you enter your password, tap "Connect." If your connection was successful, you will see the Wi-Fi symbol in the status bar at the top of your screen. The more bars you have the stronger your connection. If you do not see the Wi-Fi symbol in your status bar, you are not connected to the wireless network. Check to make sure you chose the right network and entered your password correctly.

Blackberry

To set up your wireless connection on your Blackberry follow the steps below:

  1. Press the Menu button.
  2. Using the trackball/trackpad scroll down to the "Setup" icon. Press the trackball/trackpad.
  3. Scroll over to the "Set Up Wi-Fi" icon and press the trackball/trackpad.
  4. Scroll down to" Next" and press the trackball/trackpad.
  5. Scroll to "Scan For Networks" and press the trackball/trackpad.
  6. A list of Wi-Fi networks should appear. Locate your wireless network name (SSID). If your wireless router has its wireless radio broadcasting its Wi-Fi network (most have this by default including Windstream's router) you should see your router's SSID listed on the list of networks. Note: On Windstream's equipment, the wireless network name is located on the back of the router next to SSID. Scroll to your SSID and press the trackball/trackpad.
  7. If your wireless router requires a key or password this prompt should appear. Type in the key/password, scroll to "Next" and then press the trackball/trackpad. On Windstream equipment, this password is also located on the back of the router next to "Network/Security Key." Note: Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  8. Give this Wi-Fi network profile a name. Scroll down to "Next" and press the trackball/trackpad.
  9. You should be finished with the setup process. Scroll down to "Finish" and press the trackball/trackpad.
  10. Press the "End Call" button to return to your home screen. Once you are here press the Menu button once again.
  11. Scroll down to "Manage Connections" and press the trackball/trackpad.
  12. Scroll to "Wi-Fi." Make sure this item is checked. If it is not, scroll to this item and press the trackball/trackpad.
  13. Press the End Call button to return to your home screen.

Your wireless connection should be active.

iPhone

Follow the instructions below to set up the wireless connection on your iPhone.

  1. From your home screen, select "Settings."
  2. On the Settings screen, select "Wi-Fi" and enable it if it is not already enabled.
  3. Select your network name.
  4. You will be prompted for a password. Enter the Wi-Fi network password.
  5. After the password is entered, tap "Join." Note: If "Join" is not selectable, the password is incorrect.
  6. After you join the network, you'll see a check mark next to the network and the Wi-Fi symbol in the upper-left side of your display.

Kindle

To set up your wireless connection on your Kindle follow the steps below:

  1. Press the Home button then press the Menu button.
  2. Navigate to Settings by moving the 5-way controller down, then press the 5-way controller to select.
  3. Select "View" next to Wi-Fi Settings to display a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. Kindle automatically scans for available Wi-Fi networks at periodic intervals. To rescan for available networks at any time, select "Rescan." Note: If wireless is currently turned off you will be asked if you want to switch it on. Click "OK" to do so.
  4. Locate your wireless network name (SSID). On Windstream modems the wireless network name is located on the back of the router next to SSID. If your wireless router has its wireless radio broadcasting its Wi-Fi network (most have this by default including Windstream's modem) you should see your router's SSID listed on the list of networks. Select your wireless network's SSID.
  5. If your wireless router requires a key or password, a prompt should appear. This password is also located on the back of the router next to Network/Security Key. Type in the key/password and then tap Join. Note: Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  6. Your Kindle should now be connected to your wireless network. Your Kindle will connect automatically when wireless is switched on.

Kindle Fire

To set up your wireless connection on your Kindle Fire follow the steps below:

  1. Tap the Quick Settings icon.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi symbol and make sure wireless is turned on. You may be prompted to turn on Wi-Fi by typing in the password you created for your Kindle Fire.
  3. You'll see a list of detected Wi-Fi networks. You may have to wait a moment as your Kindle detects networks in range. Tap the name of the network you wish to join. Note: On Windstream equipment the wireless network name is located on the back of the router next to SSID. Some keys/passwords are case-sensitive; make sure you use uppercase and lowercase letters appropriately.
  4. If necessary, enter the Wi-Fi network password. The password is the one used to set up the Wi-Fi network, not your Amazon account password. On Windstream modems, this password is also located on the back of the router next to Network/Security Key.
